| 3. | وَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تُقْسِطُوا فِي الْيَتَامَىٰ فَانكِحُوا مَا طَابَ لَكُم مِّنَ النِّسَاءِ مَثْنَىٰ وَثُلَاثَ وَرُبَاعَ ۖ فَإِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا فَوَاحِدَةً أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ أَدْنَىٰ أَلَّا تَعُولُوا |
| Transliteration: | Wain khiftum alla tuqsitoo fee alyatama fainkihoo ma taba lakum mina alnnisai mathna wathulatha warubaAAa fain khiftum alla taAAdiloo fawahidatan aw ma malakat aymanukum thalika adna alla taAAooloo |
| Yusuf Ali: | If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice. |
| Shakir: | And if you fear that you cannot act equitably towards orphans, then marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess; this is more proper, that you may not deviate from the right course. |
| Pickthall: | And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. | French: | Et si vous craignez de n'être pas justes envers les orphelins,... Il est permis d'épouser deux, trois ou quatre, parmi les femmes qui vous plaisent, mais, si vous craignez de n'être pas justes avec celles-ci, alors une seule, ou des esclaves que vous possédez. Cela, afin de ne pas faire d'injustice (ou afin de ne pas aggraver votre charge de famille). |
| Spanish: | Si teméis no ser equitativos con los huérfanos, entonces, casaos con las mujeres que os gusten: dos, tres o cuatro. Pero. si teméis no obrar con justicia, entonces con una sola o con vuestras esclavas. Así, evitaréis mejor el obrar mal. |
| Indonesian: | Dan jika kamu takut tidak akan dapat berlaku adil terhadap (hak-hak) perempuan yatim (bilamana kamu mengawininya), maka kawinilah wanita-wanita (lain) yang kamu senangi: dua, tiga atau empat. Kemudian jika kamu takut tidak akan dapat berlaku adil , maka (kawinilah) seorang saja , atau budak-budak yang kamu miliki. Yang demikian itu adalah lebih dekat kepada tidak berbuat aniaya.

| Malay:: | Dan jika kamu takut tidak berlaku adil terhadap perempuan-perempuan yatim (apabila kamu berkahwin dengan mereka), maka berkahwinlah dengan sesiapa yang kamu berkenan dari perempuan-perempuan (lain): Dua, tiga atau empat. Kemudian jika kamu bimbang tidak akan berlaku adil (di antara isteri-isteri kamu) maka (berkahwinlah dengan) seorang sahaja atau (pakailah) hamba-hamba perempuan yang kamu miliki. Yang demikian itu adalah lebih dekat (untuk mencegah) supaya kamu tidak melakukan kezaliman.

| German: | Und wenn ihr befürchtet, nicht gerecht hinsichtlich der Waisen zu handeln, dann heiratet, was euch an Frauen gut scheint, zwei, drei oder vier. Wenn ihr aber befürchtet, nicht gerecht zu handeln, dann (nur) eine oder was eure rechte Hand besitzt. Das ist eher geeignet, daß ihr nicht ungerecht seid. |
| Russian: | Если вы боитесь, что не будете справедливы к сиротам, то женитесь на других женщинах, которые нравятся вам: на двух, трех, четырех. Если же вы боитесь, что не будете одинаково справедливы к ним, то довольствуйтесь одной или невольницами, которыми овладели ваши десницы. Это ближе к тому, чтобы избежать несправедливости (или бедности). |
| Bosnian: | Ako se bojite da prema ženama sirotama nećete biti pravedni, onda se ženite onim ženama koje su vam dopuštene, sa po dvije, sa po tri i sa po četiri. A ako strahujete da nećete pravedni biti, onda samo sa jednom; ili – eto vam onih koje posjedujete. Tako ćete se najlakše nepravde sačuvati. |
| Urdu: | اور اگر تم یتیم لڑکیوں سے بے انصافی کرنے سے ڈرتے ہوتوجوعورتیں تمہیں پسند آئیں ان میں سے دو دو تین تین چار چار سے نکاح کر لو اگر تمہیں خطرہ ہو کہ انصاف نہ کر سکو گے تو پھر ایک ہی سے نکاح کرو جو لونڈی تمہارے ملک میں ہو وہی سہی یہ طریقہ بے انصافی سے بچنے کے لیے زیادہ قریب ہے |
