(1) And remember, We delivered you from the people of pharaoh: They set you hard tasks and punishments, slaughtered your sons and let your women-folk live; therein was a tremendous trial from your Lord.

(2) And remember We divided the sea for you and saved you and drowned pharaoh's people within your very sight.

(3) (Their plight will be) no better than that of the people of pharaoh, and their predecessors: They denied our Signs, and Allah called them to account for their sins. For Allah is strict in punishment.

(4) Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wrongfully rejected them: So see what was the end of those who made mischief.

(5) Moses said: "O pharaoh! I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds,-

(6) (pharaoh) said: "If indeed thou hast come with a Sign, show it forth,- if thou tellest the truth."

(7) Said the Chiefs of the people of pharaoh: "This is indeed a sorcerer well-versed.

(8) So there came the sorcerers to pharaoh: They said, "of course we shall have a (suitable) reward if we win!"

(9) Said pharaoh: "Believe ye in Him before I give you permission? Surely this is a trick which ye have planned in the city to drive out its people: but soon shall ye know (the consequences).

(10) Said the chiefs of pharaoh's people: "Wilt thou leave Moses and his people, to spread mischief in the land, and to abandon thee and thy gods?" He said: "Their male children will we slay; (only) their females will we save alive; and we have over them (power) irresistible."
