(1) And that He might know the hypocrites; and it was said to them: Come, fight in Allah's way, or defend yourselves. They said: If we knew fighting, we would certainly have followed you. They were on that day much nearer to unbelief than to belief. They say with their mouths what is not in their hearts, and Allah best knows what they conceal.

(2) Those who wait for (some misfortune to befall) you then If you have a victory from Allah they say: Were we not with you? And if there is a chance for the unbelievers, they say: Did we not acquire the mastery over you and defend you from the believers? So Allah shall Judge between you on the day of resurrection, and Allah will by no means give the unbelievers a way against the believers.

(3) And he had no host to help him besides Allah nor could he defend himself.

(4) Or, have they gods who can defend them against Us? They shall not be able to assist themselves, nor shall they be defended from Us.

(5) Surely Allah will defend those who believe; surely Allah does not love any one who is unfaithful, ungrateful.

(6) Except those who believe and do good and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they are oppressed; and they who act unjustly shall know to what final place of turning they shall turn back.

(7) Thus We made the earth to swallow up him and his abode; so he had no body of helpers to assist him against Allah nor was he of those who can defend themselves.

(8) Have they not travelled in the earth and seen how was the end of those who were before them? Mightier than these were they in strength-- and in fortifications in the land, but Allah destroyed them for their sins; and there was not for them any defender against Allah.

(9) And those who, when great wrong afflicts them, defend themselves.

(10) And whoever defends himself after his being oppressed, these it is against whom there is no way (to blame).
