(171) "Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works?"

(172) (His prayer was answered): "O Zakariya! We give thee good news of a son: His name shall be Yahya: on none by that name have We conferred distinction before."

(173) (The father) replied: "Dost thou hate my gods, O Abraham? If thou forbear not, I will indeed stone thee: Now get away from me for a good long while!"

(174) "And Allah doth advance in guidance those who seek guidance: and the things that endure, good Deeds, are best in the sight of thy Lord, as rewards, and best in respect of (their) eventual return."

(175) (Saying): "Eat of the good things We have provided for your sustenance, but commit no excess therein, lest My Wrath should justly descend on you: and those on whom descends My Wrath do perish indeed!

(176) Could they not see that it could not return them a word (for answer), and that it had no power either to harm them or to do them good?

(177) Flee not, but return to the good things of this life which were given you, and to your homes in order that ye may be called to account.

(178) Every soul shall have a taste of death: and We test you by evil and by good by way of trial. to Us must ye return.

(179) Nay, We gave the good things of this life to these men and their fathers until the period grew long for them; See they not that We gradually reduce the land (in their control) from its outlying borders? Is it then they who will win?

(180) (Abraham) said, "Do ye then worship, besides Allah, things that can neither be of any good to you nor do you harm?
