(1) Allah did indeed fulfil His promise to you when ye with His permission Were about to annihilate your enemy,-until ye flinched and fell to disputing about the order, and disobeyed it after He brought you in sight (of the booty) which ye covet. Among you are some that hanker after this world and some that desire the Hereafter. Then did He divert you from your foes in order to test you but He forgave you: For Allah is full of grace to those who believe.
(2) We sent not a messenger, but to be obeyed, in accordance with the will of Allah. If they had only, when they were unjust to themselves, come unto thee and asked Allah's forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah indeed Oft-returning, Most Merciful.
(3) Curses were pronounced on those among the Children of Israel who rejected Faith, by the tongue of David and of Jesus the son of Mary: because they disobeyed and persisted in excesses.
(4) Say: "I would, if I disobeyed my Lord, indeed have fear of the penalty of a Mighty Day.
(5) Such were the 'Ad People: they rejected the Signs of their Lord and Cherisher; disobeyed His messengers; And followed the command of every powerful, obstinate transgressor.
(6) The Day that their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire, they will say: "Woe to us! Would that we had obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!"
(7) And they would say: "Our Lord! We obeyed our chiefs and our great ones, and they misled us as to the (right) Path.
(8) Say: "I would, if I disobeyed my Lord, indeed have fear of the Penalty of a Mighty Day."
(9) Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah).
(10) And disobeyed (each) the messenger of their Lord; so He punished them with an abundant Penalty.
