That is because they say: We have no duty to the Gentiles. they speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly.

(12) Say: O people of the scripture! Why disbelieve ye in the revelations of Allah, when Allah (Himself) is Witness of what ye do?

(13) Say: O people of the scripture! Why drive ye back believers from the way of Allah, seeking to make it crooked, when ye are witnesses (to Allah's guidance)? Allah is not unaware of what ye do.

(14) Ye are the best community that hath been raised up for mankind. Ye enjoin right conduct and forbid indecency; and ye believe in Allah. And if the people of the scripture had believed it had been better for them. Some of them are believers; but most of them are evil-livers.

(15) they are not all alike. of the people of the scripture there is a staunch community who recite the revelations of Allah in the night season, falling prostrate (before Him).

(16) And lo! of the people of the scripture there are some who believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto you and that which was revealed unto them, humbling themselves before Allah. they purchase not a trifling gain at the price of the revelations of Allah. Verily their reward is with their Lord. Lo! Allah is swift to take account.

(17) It will not be in accordance with your desires, nor the desires of the people of the scripture. He who doeth wrong will have the recompense thereof, and will not find against Allah any protecting friend or helper.

(18) the people of the scripture ask of thee that thou shouldst cause an (actual) Book to descend upon them from heaven. they asked a greater thing of Moses aforetime, for they said: Show us Allah plainly. the storm of lightning seized them for their wickedness. then (even) after that) they chose the calf (for worship) after clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) had come unto them. And We forgave them that! And We bestowed on Moses evident authority.

(19) there is not one of the people of the scripture but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them -

(20) O people of the scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion nor utter aught concerning Allah save the truth. the Messiah, Jesus son of Mary, was only a messenger of Allah, and His word which He conveyed unto Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers, and say not "Three" - Cease! (it is) better for you! - Allah is only One Allah. Far is it removed from His Transcendent Majesty that He should have a son. His is all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. And Allah is sufficient as Defender.
