(1) This is because thy Lord destroyeth not the townships arbitrarily while their people are unconscious (of the wrong they do).

(2) And if the people of the townships had believed and kept from evil, surely We should have opened for them blessings from the sky and from the earth. But (unto every messenger) they gave the lie, and so We seized them on account of what they used to earn.

(3) Are the people of the townships then secure from the coming of Our wrath upon them as a night-raid while they sleep?

(4) Or are the people of the townships then secure from the coming of Our wrath upon them in the daytime while they play?

(5) Such were the townships. We relate some tidings of them unto thee (Muhammad). Their messengers verily came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they could not believe because they had before denied. Thus doth Allah print upon the hearts of disbelievers (that they hear not).

(6) That is (something) of the tidings of the townships (which were destroyed of old). We relate it unto thee (Muhammad). Some of them are standing and some (already) reaped.

(7) Even thus is the grasp of thy Lord when He graspeth the townships while they are doing wrong. Lo! His grasp is painful, very strong.

(8) In truth thy Lord destroyed not the townships tyrannously while their folk were doing right.

(9) We sent not before thee (any messengers) save men whom We inspired from among the folk of the townships - Have they not travelled in the land and seen the nature of the consequence for those who were before them? And verily the abode of the Hereafter, for those who ward off (evil), is best. Have ye then no sense? -

(10) And (all) those townships! We destroyed them when they did wrong, and We appointed a fixed time for their destruction.
