(1) And when Our Verses (of the Qur'an) are recited to them, they say: "We have heard (the Qur'an); if we wish we can say the like of this. This is nothing but the tales of the ancients."

(2) They would not believe in it (the Qur'an); and already the example of (Allah's punishment of) the ancients (who disbelieved) has gone forth.

(3) And nothing prevents men from believing, (now) when the guidance (the Qur'an) has come to them, and from asking Forgiveness of their Lord, except that the ways of the ancients be repeated with them (i.e. their destruction decreed by Allah), or the torment be brought to them face to face?

(4) Then let them complete their prescribed duties (Manasik of Hajj) and perform their vows, and circumambulate the ancient House (the Ka'bah at Makkah).

(5) In them (cattle offered for sacrifice) are benefits for you for an appointed term, and afterwards they are brought for sacrifice unto the ancient House (the Haram - sacred territory of Makkah).

(6) "Verily, this we have been promised - we and our fathers before (us)! This is only the tales of the ancients!"

(7) And they say: "Tales of the ancients, which he has written down: and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon."

(8) [Musa (Moses)] said: "Your Lord and the Lord of your ancient fathers!"

(9) "You and your ancient fathers?

(10) "This is no other than the false tales and religion of the ancients, [Tafsir At-Tabari]
