(1) And behold, We said to the angels: "Bow down to Adam" and they bowed down. Not so iblis: he refused and was haughty: He was of those who reject Faith.

(2) It is We Who created you and gave you shape; then We bade the angels prostrate to Adam, and they prostrate; not so iblis; He refused to be of those who prostrate.

(3) Not so iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves.

(4) (Allah) said: "O iblis! what is your reason for not being among those who prostrated themselves?"

(5) (iblis) said: "I am not one to prostrate myself to man, whom Thou didst create from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape."

(6) (iblis) said: "O my Lord! give me then respite till the Day the (dead) are raised."

(7) (iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,-

(8) Behold! We said to the angels: "Bow down unto Adam": They bowed down except iblis: He said, "Shall I bow down to one whom Thou didst create from clay?"

(9) Behold! We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam": They bowed down except iblis. He was one of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord. Will ye then take him and his progeny as protectors rather than Me? And they are enemies to you! Evil would be the exchange for the wrong-doers!

(10) When We said to the angels, "Prostrate yourselves to Adam", they prostrated themselves, but not iblis: he refused.
