(1) Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).

(2) Those men,-Allah knows what is in their hearts; so keep clear of them, but admonish them, and speak to them a word to reach their very souls.

(3) His people disputed with him. He said: "(Come) ye to dispute with me, about Allah, when He (Himself) hath guided me? I fear not (the beings) ye associate with Allah: Unless my Lord willeth, (nothing can happen). My Lord comprehendeth in His knowledge all things. Will ye not (yourselves) be admonished?

(4) Nor should the Believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind, they could devote themselves to studies in religion, and admonish the people when they return to them,- that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).

(5) Allah doth admonish you, that ye may never repeat such (conduct), if ye are (true) Believers.

(6) Those who, when they are admonished with the Signs of their Lord, droop not down at them as if they were deaf or blind;

(7) They said: "It is the same to us whether thou admonish us or be not among (our) admonishers!

(8) We rained down on them a shower (of brimstone): and evil was the shower on those who were admonished (but heeded not)!

(9) To thy heart and mind, that thou mayest admonish.

(10) And admonish thy nearest kinsmen,
