(1) If ye be on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a pledge in hand (shall suffice). Hide not testimony. He who hideth it, verily his heart is sinful. Allah is Aware of what ye do.

(2) Nay, but (the chosen of Allah is) he who fulfilleth his pledge and wardeth off (evil); for lo! Allah loveth those who ward off (evil).

(3) How can ye take it (back) after one of you hath gone in unto the other, and they have taken a strong pledge from you?

(4) And if they break their pledges after their treaty (hath been made with you) and assail your religion, then fight the heads of disbelief - Lo! they have no binding oaths - in order that they may desist.

(5) Will ye not fight a folk who broke their solemn pledges, and purposed to drive out the messenger and did attack you first? What! Fear ye them? Now Allah hath more right that ye should fear Him, if ye are believers

(6) And who are shepherds of their pledge and their covenant,

(7) And they who believe and whose seed follow them in faith, We cause their seed to join them (there), and We deprive them of nought of their (life's) work. Every man is a pledge for that which he hath earned.

(8) And those who keep their pledges and their covenant,

(9) Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds;
