(22) So when you meet in battle those who disbelieve, then smite the necks until when you have overcome them, then make (them) prisoners, and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war terminates. That (shall be so); and if Allah had pleased He would certainly have exacted what is due from them, but that He may try some of you by means of others; and (as for) those who are slain in the way of Allah, He will by no means allow their deeds to perish.

(23) And most certainly We will try you until We have known those among you who exert themselves hard, and the patient, and made your case manifest.

(24) And the stupor of death will come in truth; that is what you were trying to escape.

(25) Who created death and life that He may try you-- which of you is best in deeds; and He is the Mighty, the Forgiving,

(26) Surely We will try them as We tried the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would certainly cut off the produce in the morning,

(27) And that we used to sit in some of the sitting-places thereof to steal a hearing, but he who would (try to) listen now would find a flame lying in wait for him:

(28) So that We might try them with respect to it; and whoever turns aside from the reminder of his Lord, He will make him enter into an afflicting chastisement:

(29) Surely We have created man from a small life-germ uniting (itself): We mean to try him, so We have made him hearing, seeing.
