74. Al-Muddathir | 56 verses | The Cloaked One | Meccan

Bismi Allahi alrrahmani alrraheemi
1. يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ
Transliteration:Ya ayyuha almuddaththiru
Yusuf Ali:O thou wrapped up (in the mantle)!
Shakir:O you who are clothed!
Pickthall:O thou enveloped in thy cloak,
Mohsin Khan:O you (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) enveloped in garments!
Saheeh:O you who covers himself [with a garment],

2.قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ
Transliteration:Qum faanthir
Yusuf Ali:Arise and deliver thy warning!
Shakir:Arise and warn,
Pickthall:Arise and warn!
Mohsin Khan:Arise and warn!
Saheeh:Arise and warn

3.وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ
Transliteration:Warabbaka fakabbir
Yusuf Ali:And thy Lord do thou magnify!
Shakir:And your Lord do magnify,
Pickthall:Thy Lord magnify,
Mohsin Khan:And magnify your Lord (Allah)!
Saheeh:And your Lord glorify

4.وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ
Transliteration:Wathiyabaka fatahhir
Yusuf Ali:And thy garments keep free from stain!
Shakir:And your garments do purify,
Pickthall:Thy raiment purify,
Mohsin Khan:And purify your garments!
Saheeh:And your clothing purify

5.وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ
Transliteration:Waalrrujza faohjur
Yusuf Ali:And all abomination shun!
Shakir:And uncleanness do shun,
Pickthall:Pollution shun!
Mohsin Khan:And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)!
Saheeh:And uncleanliness avoid

6.وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ
Transliteration:Wala tamnun tastakthiru
Yusuf Ali:Nor expect, in giving, any increase (for thyself)!
Shakir:And bestow not favors that you may receive again with increase,
Pickthall:And show not favour, seeking wordly gain!
Mohsin Khan:And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of obedience to Allah as a favour to Him).
Saheeh:And do not confer favor to acquire more

7.وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ
Transliteration:Walirabbika faisbir
Yusuf Ali:But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant!
Shakir:And for the sake of your Lord, be patient.
Pickthall:For the sake of thy Lord, be patient!
Mohsin Khan:And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)!
Saheeh:But for your Lord be patient.

8.فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ
Transliteration:Faitha nuqira fee alnnaqoori
Yusuf Ali:Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded,
Shakir:For when the trumpet is sounded,
Pickthall:For when the trumpet shall sound,
Mohsin Khan:Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. the second blowing of the horn).
Saheeh:And when the trumpet is blown,

9.فَذَ‌ٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ
Transliteration:Fathalika yawmaithin yawmun AAaseerun
Yusuf Ali:That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,-
Shakir:That, at that time, shall be a difficult day,
Pickthall:Surely that day will be a day of anguish,
Mohsin Khan:Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day -
Saheeh:That Day will be a difficult day

10.عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ
Transliteration:AAala alkafireena ghayru yaseerin
Yusuf Ali:Far from easy for those without Faith.
Shakir:For the unbelievers, anything but easy.
Pickthall:Not of ease, for disbelievers.
Mohsin Khan:Far from easy for the disbelievers.
Saheeh:For the disbelievers - not easy.

11.ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا
Transliteration:Tharnee waman khalaqtu waheedan
Yusuf Ali:Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!-
Shakir:Leave Me and him whom I created alone,
Pickthall:Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely,
Mohsin Khan:Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created lonely (without any wealth or children etc, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)!
Saheeh:Leave Me with the one I created alone

12.وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا
Transliteration:WajaAAaltu lahu malan mamdoodan
Yusuf Ali:To whom I granted resources in abundance,
Shakir:And give him vast riches,
Pickthall:And then bestowed upon him ample means,
Mohsin Khan:And then granted him resources in abundance.
Saheeh:And to whom I granted extensive wealth

13.وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا
Transliteration:Wabaneena shuhoodan
Yusuf Ali:And sons to be by his side!-
Shakir:And sons dwelling in his presence,
Pickthall:And sons abiding in his presence
Mohsin Khan:And children to be by his side.
Saheeh:And children present [with him]

14.وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا
Transliteration:Wamahhadtu lahu tamheedan
Yusuf Ali:To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable!
Shakir:And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably;
Pickthall:And made (life) smooth for him.
Mohsin Khan:And made life smooth and comfortable for him.
Saheeh:And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

15.ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ
Transliteration:Thumma yatmaAAu an azeeda
Yusuf Ali:Yet is he greedy-that I should add (yet more);-
Shakir:And yet he desires that I should add more!
Pickthall:Yet he desireth that I should give more.
Mohsin Khan:After all that he desires that I should give more;
Saheeh:Then he desires that I should add more.

16.كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا
Transliteration:Kalla innahu kana liayatina AAaneedan
Yusuf Ali:By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory!
Shakir:By no means! surely he offers opposition to Our communications.
Pickthall:Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations.
Mohsin Khan:Nay! Verily, he has been opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations).
Saheeh:No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

17.سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا
Transliteration:Saorhiquhu saAAoodan
Yusuf Ali:Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities!
Shakir:I will make a distressing punishment overtake him.
Pickthall:On him I shall impose a fearful doom.
Mohsin Khan:I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or) face a severe torment!
Saheeh:I will cover him with arduous torment.

18.إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ
Transliteration:Innahu fakkara waqaddara
Yusuf Ali:For he thought and he plotted;-
Shakir:Surely he reflected and guessed,
Pickthall:For lo! he did consider; then he planned -
Mohsin Khan:Verily, he thought and plotted.
Saheeh:Indeed, he thought and deliberated.

19.فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
Transliteration:Faqutila kayfa qaddara
Yusuf Ali:And woe to him! How he plotted!-
Shakir:But may he be cursed how he plotted;
Pickthall:(Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned!
Mohsin Khan:So let him be cursed: how he plotted!
Saheeh:So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

20.ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ
Transliteration:Thumma qutila kayfa qaddara
Yusuf Ali:Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!-
Shakir:Again, may he be cursed how he plotted;
Pickthall:Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! -
Mohsin Khan:And once more let him be cursed: how he plotted!
Saheeh:Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

21.ثُمَّ نَظَرَ
Transliteration:Thumma nathara
Yusuf Ali:Then he looked round;
Shakir:Then he looked,
Pickthall:Then looked he,
Mohsin Khan:Then he thought.
Saheeh:Then he considered [again];

22.ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ
Transliteration:Thumma AAabasa wabasara
Yusuf Ali:Then he frowned and he scowled;
Shakir:Then he frowned and scowled,
Pickthall:Then frowned he and showed displeasure.
Mohsin Khan:Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way;
Saheeh:Then he frowned and scowled;

23.ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ
Transliteration:Thumma adbara waistakbara
Yusuf Ali:Then he turned back and was haughty;
Shakir:Then he turned back and was big with pride,
Pickthall:Then turned he away in pride
Mohsin Khan:Then he turned back, and was proud.
Saheeh:Then he turned back and was arrogant

24.فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ
Transliteration:Faqala in hatha illa sihrun yutharu
Yusuf Ali:Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old;
Shakir:~Then he said: This is naught but enchantment, narrated (from others);
Pickthall:And said: This is naught else than magic from of old;
Mohsin Khan:Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old,
Saheeh:And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

25.إِنْ هَـٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ
Transliteration:In hatha illa qawlu albashari
Yusuf Ali:"This is nothing but the word of a mortal!"
Shakir:This is naught but the word of a mortal.
Pickthall:This is naught else than speech of mortal man.
Mohsin Khan:"This is nothing but the word of a human being!"
Saheeh:This is not but the word of a human being."

26.سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ
Transliteration:Saosleehi saqara
Yusuf Ali:Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire!
Shakir:I will cast him into hell.
Pickthall:Him shall I fling unto the burning.
Mohsin Khan:I will cast him into Hell-fire.
Saheeh:I will drive him into Saqar.

27.وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ
Transliteration:Wama adraka ma saqaru
Yusuf Ali:And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is?
Shakir:And what will make you realize what hell is?
Pickthall:- Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! -
Mohsin Khan:And what will make you know (exactly) what Hell-fire is?
Saheeh:And what can make you know what is Saqar?

28.لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ
Transliteration:La tubqee wala tatharu
Yusuf Ali:Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!-
Shakir:It leaves naught nor does it spare aught.
Pickthall:It leaveth naught; it spareth naught
Mohsin Khan:It spares not (any sinner), nor does it leave (anything unburnt)!
Saheeh:It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

29.لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ
Transliteration:Lawwahatun lilbashari
Yusuf Ali:Darkening and changing the colour of man!
Shakir:It scorches the mortal.
Pickthall:It shrivelleth the man.
Mohsin Khan:Burning and blackening the skins!
Saheeh:Blackening the skins.

30.عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ
Transliteration:AAalayha tisAAata AAashara
Yusuf Ali:Over it are Nineteen.
Shakir:Over it are nineteen.
Pickthall:Above it are nineteen.
Mohsin Khan:Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell).
Saheeh:Over it are nineteen [angels].

31.وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَ‌ٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَن يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ
Transliteration:Wama jaAAalna ashaba alnnari illa malaikatan wama jaAAalna AAiddatahum illa fitnatan lillatheena kafaroo liyastayqina allatheena ootoo alkitaba wayazdada allatheena amanoo eemanan wala yartaba allatheena ootoo alkitaba waalmuminoona waliyaqoola allatheena fee quloobihim maradun waalkafiroona matha arada Allahu bihatha mathalan kathalika yudillu Allahu man yashao wayahdee man yashao wama yaAAlamu junooda rabbika illa huwa wama hiya illa thikra lilbashari
Yusuf Ali:And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind.
Shakir:And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals.
Pickthall:We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals.
Mohsin Khan:And We have set none but angels as guardians of the Fire. And We have fixed their number (19) only as a trial for the disbelievers, in order that the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) may arrive at a certainty [that this Qur'an is the truth as it agrees with their Books regarding the number (19) which is written in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] and that the believers may increase in Faith (as this Qur'an is the truth), and that no doubt may be left for the people of the Scripture and the believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease (of hypocrisy) and the disbelievers may say: "What Allah intends by this (curious) example ?" Thus Allah leads astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none can know the hosts of your Lord but He. And this (Hell) is nothing else than a (warning) reminder to mankind.
Saheeh:And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is hypocrisy and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allah intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allah leave astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And mention of the Fire is not but a reminder to humanity.

32.كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ
Transliteration:Kalla waalqamari
Yusuf Ali:Nay, verily: By the Moon,
Shakir:Nay; I swear by the moon,
Pickthall:Nay, by the Moon
Mohsin Khan:Nay! And by the moon
Saheeh:No! By the moon

33.وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ
Transliteration:Waallayli ith adbara
Yusuf Ali:And by the Night as it retreateth,
Shakir:And the night when it departs,
Pickthall:And the night when it withdraweth
Mohsin Khan:And by the night when it withdraws.
Saheeh:And [by] the night when it departs

34.وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ
Transliteration:Waalssubhi itha asfara
Yusuf Ali:And by the Dawn as it shineth forth,-
Shakir:And the daybreak when it shines;
Pickthall:And the dawn when it shineth forth,
Mohsin Khan:And by the dawn when it brightens.
Saheeh:And [by] the morning when it brightens,

35.إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ
Transliteration:Innaha laihda alkubari
Yusuf Ali:This is but one of the mighty (portents),
Shakir:Surely it (hell) is one of the gravest (misfortunes),
Pickthall:Lo! this is one of the greatest (portents)
Mohsin Khan:Verily, it (Hell, or their denial of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم, or the Day of Resurrection) is but one of the greatest (signs).
Saheeh:Indeed, the Fire is of the greatest [afflictions]

36.نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ
Transliteration:Natheeran lilbashari
Yusuf Ali:A warning to mankind,-
Shakir:A warning to mortals,
Pickthall:As a warning unto men,
Mohsin Khan:A warning to mankind -
Saheeh:As a warning to humanity -

37.لِمَن شَاءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ
Transliteration:Liman shaa minkum an yataqaddama aw yataakhkhara
Yusuf Ali:To any of you that chooses to press forward, or to follow behind;-
Shakir:To him among you who wishes to go forward or remain behind.
Pickthall:Unto him of you who will advance or hang back.
Mohsin Khan:To any of you that chooses to go forward (by working righteous deeds), or to remain behind (by committing sins).
Saheeh:To whoever wills among you to proceed or stay behind.

38.كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ
Transliteration:Kullu nafsin bima kasabat raheenatun
Yusuf Ali:Every soul will be (held) in pledge for its deeds.
Shakir:Every soul is held in pledge for what it earns,
Pickthall:Every soul is a pledge for its own deeds;
Mohsin Khan:Every person is a pledge for what he has earned,
Saheeh:Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained

39.إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ
Transliteration:Illa ashaba alyameeni
Yusuf Ali:Except the Companions of the Right Hand.
Shakir:Except the people of the right hand,
Pickthall:Save those who will stand on the right hand.
Mohsin Khan:Except those on the Right, (i.e. the pious true believers of Islamic Monotheism).
Saheeh:Except the companions of the right,

40.فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ
Transliteration:Fee jannatin yatasaaloona
Yusuf Ali:(They will be) in Gardens (of Delight): they will question each other,
Shakir:In gardens, they shall ask each other
Pickthall:In gardens they will ask one another
Mohsin Khan:In Gardens (Paradise) they will ask one another,
Saheeh:[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

41.عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ
Transliteration:AAani almujrimeena
Yusuf Ali:And (ask) of the Sinners:
Shakir:About the guilty:
Pickthall:Concerning the guilty:
Mohsin Khan:About Al-Mujrimun (polytheists, criminals, disbelievers), (And they will say to them):
Saheeh:About the criminals,

42.مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ
Transliteration:Ma salakakum fee saqara
Yusuf Ali:"What led you into Hell Fire?"
Shakir:What has brought you into hell?
Pickthall:What hath brought you to this burning?
Mohsin Khan:"What has caused you to enter Hell?"
Saheeh:[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

43.قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ
Transliteration:Qaloo lam naku mina almusalleena
Yusuf Ali:They will say: "We were not of those who prayed;
Shakir:They shall say: We were not of those who prayed;
Pickthall:They will answer: We were not of those who prayed
Mohsin Khan:They will say: "We were not of those who used to offer the Salat (prayers),
Saheeh:They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

44.وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ
Transliteration:Walam naku nutAAimu almiskeena
Yusuf Ali:"Nor were we of those who fed the indigent;
Shakir:And we used not to feed the poor;
Pickthall:Nor did we feed the wretched.
Mohsin Khan:"Nor we used to feed Al-Miskin (the poor);
Saheeh:Nor did we used to feed the poor.

45.وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ
Transliteration:Wakunna nakhoodu maAAa alkhaideena
Yusuf Ali:"But we used to talk vanities with vain talkers;
Shakir:And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who entered into vain discourses.
Pickthall:We used to wade (in vain dispute) with (all) waders,
Mohsin Khan:"And we used to talk falsehood (all that which Allah hated) with vain talkers.
Saheeh:And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

46.وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ
Transliteration:Wakunna nukaththibu biyawmi alddeeni
Yusuf Ali:"And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
Shakir:And we used to call the day of judgment a lie;
Pickthall:And we used to deny the Day of Judgment,
Mohsin Khan:And we used to belie the Day of Recompense,
Saheeh:And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

47.حَتَّىٰ أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ
Transliteration:Hatta atana alyaqeenu
Yusuf Ali:"Until there came to us (the Hour) that is certain."
Shakir:Till death overtook us.
Pickthall:Till the Inevitable came unto us.
Mohsin Khan:"Until there came to us (the death) that is certain."
Saheeh:Until there came to us the certainty."

48.فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ
Transliteration:Fama tanfaAAuhum shafaAAatu alshshafiAAeena
Yusuf Ali:Then will no intercession of (any) intercessors profit them.
Shakir:So the intercession of intercessors shall not avail them.
Pickthall:The mediation of no mediators will avail them then.
Mohsin Khan:So no intercession of intercessors will be of any use to them.
Saheeh:So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

49.فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ
Transliteration:Fama lahum AAani alttathkirati muAArideena
Yusuf Ali:Then what is the matter with them that they turn away from admonition?-
Shakir:What is then the matter with them, that they turn away from the admonition
Pickthall:Why now turn they away from the Admonishment,
Mohsin Khan:Then what is wrong with them (i.e. the polytheists, the disbelievers) that they turn away from (receiving) admonition?
Saheeh:Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

50.كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ
Transliteration:Kaannahum humurun mustanfiratun
Yusuf Ali:As if they were affrighted asses,
Shakir:As if they were asses taking fright
Pickthall:As they were frightened asses
Mohsin Khan:As if they were (frightened) wild donkeys.
Saheeh:As if they were alarmed donkeys

51.فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍ
Transliteration:Farrat min qaswaratin
Yusuf Ali:Fleeing from a lion!
Shakir:That had fled from a lion?
Pickthall:Fleeing from a lion?
Mohsin Khan:Fleeing from a hunter, or a lion, or a beast of prey.
Saheeh:Fleeing from a lion?

52.بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً
Transliteration:Bal yureedu kullu imriin minhum an yuta suhufan munashsharatan
Yusuf Ali:Forsooth, each one of them wants to be given scrolls (of revelation) spread out!
Shakir:Nay; every one of them desires that he may be given pages spread out;
Pickthall:Nay, but everyone of them desireth that he should be given open pages (from Allah).
Mohsin Khan:Nay, everyone of them desires that he should be given pages spread out (coming from Allah with a writing that Islam is the right religion, and Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم has come with the truth from Allah, the Lord of the heavens and earth).
Saheeh:Rather, every person among them desires that he would be given scriptures spread about.

53.كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ
Transliteration:Kalla bal la yakhafoona alakhirata
Yusuf Ali:By no means! But they fear not the Hereafter,
Shakir:Nay! but they do not fear the hereafter.
Pickthall:Nay, verily. They fear not the Hereafter.
Mohsin Khan:Nay! But they fear not the Hereafter (from Allah's punishment).
Saheeh:No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

54.كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌ
Transliteration:Kalla innahu tathkiratun
Yusuf Ali:Nay, this surely is an admonition:
Shakir:Nay! it is surely an admonition.
Pickthall:Nay, verily. Lo! this is an Admonishment.
Mohsin Khan:Nay, verily, this (Qur'an) is an admonition,
Saheeh:No! Indeed, the Qur'an is a reminder

55.فَمَن شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ
Transliteration:Faman shaa thakarahu
Yusuf Ali:Let any who will, keep it in remembrance!
Shakir:So whoever pleases may mind it.
Pickthall:So whosoever will may heed.
Mohsin Khan:So whosoever will (let him read it), and receive admonition (from it)!
Saheeh:Then whoever wills will remember it.

56.وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَن يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ
Transliteration:Wama yathkuroona illa an yashaa Allahu huwa ahlu alttaqwa waahlu almaghfirati
Yusuf Ali:But none will keep it in remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the Lord of Forgiveness.
Shakir:And they will not mind unless Allah please. He is worthy to be feared and worthy to forgive.
Pickthall:And they will not heed unless Allah willeth (it). He is the fount of fear. He is the fount of Mercy.
Mohsin Khan:And they will not receive admonition unless Allah wills; He (Allah) is the One, deserving that mankind should be afraid of, and should be dutiful to Him, and should not take any Ilah (god) along with Him, and He is the One Who forgives (sins).
Saheeh:And they will not remember except that Allah wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
