1. | اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ |
Transliteration: | Iqra biismi rabbika allathee khalaqa |
Yusuf Ali: | Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created- |
Shakir: | Read in the name of your Lord Who created. |
Pickthall: | Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, |
Mohsin Khan: | Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). |
Saheeh: | Recite in the name of your Lord who created - |

2. | خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ |
Transliteration: | Khalaqa alinsana min AAalaqin |
Yusuf Ali: | Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood: |
Shakir: | He created man from a clot. |
Pickthall: | Createth man from a clot. |
Mohsin Khan: | He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). |
Saheeh: | Created man from a clinging substance. |

3. | اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الْأَكْرَمُ |
Transliteration: | Iqra warabbuka alakramu |
Yusuf Ali: | Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,- |
Shakir: | Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, |
Pickthall: | Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, |
Mohsin Khan: | Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. |
Saheeh: | Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous - |

4. | الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ |
Transliteration: | Allathee AAallama bialqalami |
Yusuf Ali: | He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- |
Shakir: | Who taught (to write) with the pen |
Pickthall: | Who teacheth by the pen, |
Mohsin Khan: | Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. |
Saheeh: | Who taught by the pen - |

5. | عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ |
Transliteration: | AAallama alinsana ma lam yaAAlam |
Yusuf Ali: | Taught man that which he knew not. |
Shakir: | Taught man what he knew not. |
Pickthall: | Teacheth man that which he knew not. |
Mohsin Khan: | He has taught man that which he knew not. |
Saheeh: | Taught man that which he knew not. |

6. | كَلَّا إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَيَطْغَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Kalla inna alinsana layatgha |
Yusuf Ali: | Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds, |
Shakir: | Nay! man is most surely inordinate, |
Pickthall: | Nay, but verily man is rebellious |
Mohsin Khan: | Nay! Verily, man does transgress (in disbelief and evil deed). |
Saheeh: | No! [But] indeed, man transgresses |

7. | أَن رَّآهُ اسْتَغْنَىٰ |
Transliteration: | An raahu istaghna |
Yusuf Ali: | In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. |
Shakir: | Because he sees himself free from want. |
Pickthall: | That he thinketh himself independent! |
Mohsin Khan: | Because he considers himself self-sufficient. |
Saheeh: | Because he sees himself self-sufficient. |

8. | إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ الرُّجْعَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Inna ila rabbika alrrujAAa |
Yusuf Ali: | Verily, to thy Lord is the return (of all). |
Shakir: | Surely to your Lord is the return. |
Pickthall: | Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. |
Mohsin Khan: | Surely, unto your Lord is the return. |
Saheeh: | Indeed, to your Lord is the return. |

9. | أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Araayta allathee yanha |
Yusuf Ali: | Seest thou one who forbids- |
Shakir: | Have you seen him who forbids |
Pickthall: | Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth |
Mohsin Khan: | Have you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) seen him (i.e. Abu Jahl) who prevents |
Saheeh: | Have you seen the one who forbids |

10. | عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | AAabdan itha salla |
Yusuf Ali: | A votary when he (turns) to pray? |
Shakir: | A servant when he prays? |
Pickthall: | A slave when he prayeth? |
Mohsin Khan: | A slave (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) when he prays? |
Saheeh: | A servant when he prays? |

11. | أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Araayta in kana AAala alhuda |
Yusuf Ali: | Seest thou if he is on (the road of) Guidance?- |
Shakir: | Have you considered if he were on the right way, |
Pickthall: | Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) |
Mohsin Khan: | Tell me if he (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) is on the guidance (of Allah) |
Saheeh: | Have you seen if he is upon guidance |

12. | أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Aw amara bialttaqwa |
Yusuf Ali: | Or enjoins Righteousness? |
Shakir: | Or enjoined guarding (against evil)? |
Pickthall: | Or enjoineth piety? |
Mohsin Khan: | Or enjoins piety! |
Saheeh: | Or enjoins righteousness? |

13. | أَرَأَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | Araayta in kaththaba watawalla |
Yusuf Ali: | Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? |
Shakir: | Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back? |
Pickthall: | Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? |
Mohsin Khan: | Tell me if he (Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Qur'an) and turns away? |
Saheeh: | Have you seen if he denies and turns away - |
|
14. | أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ اللَّهَ يَرَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Alam yaAAlam bianna Allaha yara |
Yusuf Ali: | Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? |
Shakir: | Does he not know that Allah does see? |
Pickthall: | Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? |
Mohsin Khan: | Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? |
Saheeh: | Does he not know that Allah sees? |

15. | كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًا بِالنَّاصِيَةِ |
Transliteration: | Kalla lain lam yantahi lanasfaAAan bialnnasiyati |
Yusuf Ali: | Let him beware! If he desist not, We will drag him by the forelock,- |
Shakir: | Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead, |
Pickthall: | Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - |
Mohsin Khan: | Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock - |
Saheeh: | No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - |

16. | نَاصِيَةٍ كَاذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ |
Transliteration: | Nasiyatin kathibatin khatiatin |
Yusuf Ali: | A lying, sinful forelock! |
Shakir: | A lying, sinful forehead. |
Pickthall: | The lying, sinful forelock - |
Mohsin Khan: | A lying, sinful forelock! |
Saheeh: | A lying, sinning forelock. |

17. | فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُ |
Transliteration: | FalyadAAu nadiyahu |
Yusuf Ali: | Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): |
Shakir: | Then let him summon his council, |
Pickthall: | Then let him call upon his henchmen! |
Mohsin Khan: | Then let him call upon his council (of helpers). |
Saheeh: | Then let him call his associates; |
|
18. | سَنَدْعُ الزَّبَانِيَةَ |
Transliteration: | SanadAAu alzzabaniyata |
Yusuf Ali: | We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! |
Shakir: | We too would summon the braves of the army. |
Pickthall: | We will call the guards of hell. |
Mohsin Khan: | We will call out the guards of Hell (to deal with him)! |
Saheeh: | We will call the angels of Hell. |
|
19. | كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَاسْجُدْ وَاقْتَرِب ۩ |
Transliteration: | Kalla la tutiAAhu waosjud waiqtarib |
Yusuf Ali: | Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! |
Shakir: | Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). |
Pickthall: | Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). |
Mohsin Khan: | Nay! (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم)! Do not obey him (Abu Jahl). Fall prostrate and draw near to Allah! |
Saheeh: | No! Do not obey him. But prostrate and draw near [to Allah]. |
