1. | عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | AAabasa watawalla |
Yusuf Ali: | (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, |
Shakir: | He frowned and turned (his) back, |
Pickthall: | He frowned and turned away |
Mohsin Khan: | (The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم) frowned and turned away. |
Saheeh: | The Prophet frowned and turned away |
Urdu: | پیغمبر چین بجیں ہوئے اور منہ موڑ لیا |

2. | أَن جَاءَهُ الْأَعْمَىٰ |
Transliteration: | An jaahu alaAAma |
Yusuf Ali: | Because there came to him the blind man (interrupting). |
Shakir: | Because there came to him the blind man. |
Pickthall: | Because the blind man came unto him. |
Mohsin Khan: | Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). |
Saheeh: | Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. |
Urdu: | کہ ان کے پاس ایک اندھا آیا |

3. | وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُ يَزَّكَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | Wama yudreeka laAAallahu yazzakka |
Yusuf Ali: | But what could tell thee but that perchance he might grow (in spiritual understanding)?- |
Shakir: | And what would make you know that he would purify himself, |
Pickthall: | What could inform thee but that he might grow (in grace) |
Mohsin Khan: | And how can you know that he might become pure (from sins)? |
Saheeh: | But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified |
Urdu: | اور آپ کو کیا معلوم کہ شاید وہ پاک ہوجائے |

4. | أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ الذِّكْرَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Aw yaththakkaru fatanfaAAahu alththikra |
Yusuf Ali: | Or that he might receive admonition, and the teaching might profit him? |
Shakir: | Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? |
Pickthall: | Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? |
Mohsin Khan: | Or he might receive admonition, and the admonition might profit him? |
Saheeh: | Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? |
Urdu: | یا وہ نصیحت پکڑ لے تو اس کو نصیحت نفع دے |

5. | أَمَّا مَنِ اسْتَغْنَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Amma mani istaghna |
Yusuf Ali: | As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, |
Shakir: | As for him who considers himself free from need (of you), |
Pickthall: | As for him who thinketh himself independent, |
Mohsin Khan: | As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, |
Saheeh: | As for he who thinks himself without need, |
Urdu: | لیکن وہ جو پروا نہیں کرتا |

6. | فَأَنتَ لَهُ تَصَدَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | Faanta lahu tasadda |
Yusuf Ali: | To him dost thou attend; |
Shakir: | To him do you address yourself. |
Pickthall: | Unto him thou payest regard. |
Mohsin Khan: | To him you attend; |
Saheeh: | To him you give attention. |
Urdu: | سو آپ کے لیے توجہ کرتے ہیں |

7. | وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | Wama AAalayka alla yazzakka |
Yusuf Ali: | Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). |
Shakir: | And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself |
Pickthall: | Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). |
Mohsin Khan: | What does it matter to you if he will not become pure (from disbelief: you are only a Messenger, your duty is to convey the Message of Allah). |
Saheeh: | And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. |
Urdu: | حالانکہ آپ پر اس کےنہ سدھرنے کا کوئی الزام نہیں |

8. | وَأَمَّا مَن جَاءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Waamma man jaaka yasAAa |
Yusuf Ali: | But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, |
Shakir: | And as to him who comes to you striving hard, |
Pickthall: | But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose |
Mohsin Khan: | But as to him who came to you running, |
Saheeh: | But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] |
Urdu: | اور لیکن جو آپ کے پاس دوڑتا ہوا آیا |

9. | وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ |
Transliteration: | Wahuwa yakhsha |
Yusuf Ali: | And with fear (in his heart), |
Shakir: | And he fears, |
Pickthall: | And hath fear, |
Mohsin Khan: | And is afraid (of Allah and His punishment). |
Saheeh: | While he fears [Allah], |
Urdu: | اور وہ ڈر رہا ہے |

10. | فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ |
Transliteration: | Faanta AAanhu talahha |
Yusuf Ali: | Of him wast thou unmindful. |
Shakir: | From him will you divert yourself. |
Pickthall: | From him thou art distracted. |
Mohsin Khan: | Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, |
Saheeh: | From him you are distracted. |
Urdu: | تو آپ اس سے بے پروائی کرتے ہیں |
