(1) And remember We appointed forty nights for Moses, and in his absence ye took the calf (for worship), and ye did grievous wrong.
(2) Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).
(3) The people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, the image of calf, (for worship): it seemed to low: did they not see that it could neither speak to them, nor show them the way? They took it for worship and they did wrong.
(4) When Moses came back to his people, angry and grieved, he said: "Evil it is that ye have done in my place in my absence: did ye make haste to bring on the judgment of your Lord?" He put down the tablets, seized his brother by (the hair of) his head, and dragged him to him. Aaron said: "Son of my mother! the people did indeed reckon me as naught, and went near to slaying me! Make not the enemies rejoice over my misfortune, nor count thou me amongst the people of sin."
(5) "This (say I), in order that He may know that I have never been false to him in his absence, and that Allah will never guide the snare of the false ones.
(6) (Allah) said: "We have tested thy people in thy absence: the Samiri has led them astray."
(7) "I will certainly punish him with a severe penalty, or execute him, unless he bring me a clear reason (for absence)."
