(1) Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.
(2) And already had Allah given you victory at [the battle of] badr while you were few in number. Then fear Allah; perhaps you will be grateful.
(3) Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uhud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
(4) And the good land - its vegetation emerges by permission of its Lord; but that which is bad - nothing emerges except sparsely, with difficulty. Thus do We diversify the signs for a people who are grateful.
(5) Then We exchanged in place of the bad [condition], good, until they increased [and prospered] and said, "Our fathers [also] were touched with hardship and ease." So We seized them suddenly while they did not perceive.
(6) But when good came to them, they said, "This is ours [by right]." And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allah, but most of them do not know.
(7) And We divided them throughout the earth into nations. Of them some were righteous, and of them some were otherwise. And We tested them with good [times] and bad that perhaps they would return [to obedience].
(8) [It is] just as when your Lord brought you out of your home [for the battle of badr] in truth, while indeed, a party among the believers were unwilling,
(9) And [there are] others who have acknowledged their sins. They had mixed a righteous deed with another that was bad. Perhaps Allah will turn to them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
(10) But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "bad times have left me." Indeed, he is exultant and boastful -
