(1) They are [varying] degrees in the sight of Allah, and Allah is Seeing of whatever they do.

(2) Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]. But Allah has preferred the mujahideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward -

(3) degrees [of high position] from Him and forgiveness and mercy. And Allah is ever Forgiving and Merciful.

(4) And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing.

(5) And for all are degrees from what they have done. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.

(6) And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

(7) Those are the believers, truly. For them are degrees [of high position] with their Lord and forgiveness and noble provision.

(8) So he began [the search] with their bags before the bag of his brother; then he extracted it from the bag of his brother. Thus did We plan for Joseph. He could not have taken his brother within the religion of the king except that Allah willed. We raise in degrees whom We will, but over every possessor of knowledge is one [more] knowing.

(9) Look how We have favored [in provision] some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees [of difference] and greater in distinction.

(10) But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
