(3) And when there comes to them information about [public] security or fear, they spread it around. But if they had referred it back to the Messenger or to those of authority among them, then the ones who [can] draw correct conclusions from it would have known about it. And if not for the favor of Allah upon you and His mercy, you would have followed Satan, except for a few.

(4) Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujahideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred the mujahideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]. But Allah has preferred the mujahideen over those who remain [behind] with a great reward -

(5) And Ishmael and Elisha and Jonah and Lot - and all [of them] We preferred over the worlds.

(6) He said, "Is it other than Allah I should desire for you as a god while He has preferred you over the worlds?"

(7) O you who have believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as allies if they have preferred disbelief over belief. And whoever does so among you - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

(8) They said, "By Allah, certainly has Allah preferred you over us, and indeed, we have been sinners."

(9) That is because they preferred the worldly life over the Hereafter and that Allah does not guide the disbelieving people.

(10) And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
