(1) Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.

(2) And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.

(3) If you do not aid the Prophet - Allah has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down his tranquillity upon him and supported him with angels you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

(4) And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.

(5) And thus We have sent down to you the Qur'an. And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture believe in it. And among these [people of makkah] are those who believe in it. And none reject Our verses except the disbelievers.

(6) Have they not seen that We made [makkah] a safe sanctuary, while people are being taken away all around them? Then in falsehood do they believe, and in the favor of Allah they disbelieve?

(7) And those before them denied, and the people of makkah have not attained a tenth of what We had given them. But the former peoples denied My messengers, so how [terrible] was My reproach.

(8) And thus We have revealed to you an Arabic Qur'an that you may warn the Mother of Cities [makkah] and those around it and warn of the Day of Assembly, about which there is no doubt. A party will be in Paradise and a party in the Blaze.

(9) However, I gave enjoyment to these [people of makkah] and their fathers until there came to them the truth and a clear Messenger.

(10) And how many a city was stronger than your city [makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them.
