(31) He hideth himself from the folk because of the evil of that whereof he hath had tidings, (asking himself): Shall he keep it in contempt, or bury it beneath the dust. Verily evil is their judgment.
(32) Hath your Lord then distinguished you (O men of Makka) by giving you sons, and hath chosen for himself females from among the angels? Lo! verily ye speak an awful word!
(33) And say: Praise be to Allah, Who hath not taken unto himself a son, and Who hath no partner in the Sovereignty, nor hath He any protecting friend through dependence. And magnify Him with all magnificence.
(34) And he went into his garden, while he (thus) wronged himself. He said: I think not that all this will ever perish.
(35) And he had no troop of men to help him as against Allah, nor could he save himself.
(36) It befitteth not (the Majesty of) Allah that He should take unto himself a son. Glory be to Him! When He decreeth a thing, He saith unto it only: Be! and it is.
(37) And they say: The Beneficent hath taken unto himself a son.
(38) And they say: The Beneficent hath taken unto himself a son. Be He Glorified! Nay, but (those whom they call sons) are honoured slaves;
(39) Whoso is wont to think (through envy) that Allah will not give him (Muhammad) victory in the world and the Hereafter (and is enraged at the thought of his victory), let him stretch a rope up to the roof (of his dwelling), and let him hang himself. Then let him see whether his strategy dispelleth that whereat he rageth!.
(40) But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old.
