(1) Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

(2) And how many cities have We destroyed, and Our punishment came to them at night or while they were sleeping at noon.

(3) Then, did the people of the cities feel secure from Our punishment coming to them at night while they were asleep?

(4) So We cast [a cover of sleep] over their ears within the cave for a number of years.

(5) And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.

(6) And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection.

(7) And of His signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking of His bounty. Indeed in that are signs for a people who listen.

(8) They will say, "O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?" [The reply will be], "This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth."

(9) Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.
