(1) And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with commands and he fulfilled them. [Allah] said, "Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allah] said, "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers."

(2) And thus We have tried some of them through others that the disbelievers might say, "Is it these whom Allah has favored among us?" Is not Allah most knowing of those who are grateful?

(3) Do they not see that they are tried every year once or twice but then they do not repent nor do they remember?

(4) [And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone, but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.

(5) [Allah] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Samiri has led them astray."

(6) Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried?

(7) But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.

(8) [David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allah].

(9) And We certainly tried Solomon and placed on his throne a body; then he returned.

(10) And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger,
