(1) Nay, they say: "These (revelations of the Qur'an which are revealed to Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) are mixed up false dreams! Nay, he has invented them! - Nay, he is a poet! Let him then bring us an Ayah (sign as a proof) like the ones (Prophets) the former were sent (with)!"

(2) He (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: "My Lord! Judge You in truth! Our Lord is the Most Gracious, Whose Help is to be sought against that which you attribute (unto Allah that He has offspring, and unto Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم that he is a sorcerer, and unto the Qur'an that it is poetry)!"

(3) As for the poets, the erring ones follow them,

(4) See you not that they speak about every subject (praising people - right or wrong) in their poetry?

(5) Except those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, and remember Allah much, and vindicate themselves after they have been wronged [by replying back in poetry to the unjust poetry (which the pagan poets utter against the Muslims)]. And those who do wrong will come to know by what overturning they will be overturned.

(6) And We have not taught him (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) poetry, nor is it suitable for him. This is only a Reminder and a plain Qur'an.

(7) And (they) said: "Are we going to abandon our alihah (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?"

(8) Or do they say: "(Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) is a poet! We await for him some calamity by time!"

(9) It is not the word of a poet: little is that you believe!
